The Syrian Revolution began as a nonviolent struggle against the world’s most corrupt authoritarian regime. Despite the emergence of armed rebel groups in the struggle, some of which began imposing their own abhorrent authoritarianism, independent U.N. reports confirm that the Assad regime’s human rights abuses continue to “far outweigh” those committed by rebel sides. The Syrian Nonviolence Movement, founded inside Syria by hundreds of peaceful protesters in April 2011, continues to work toward true and lasting change in Syria, from the bottom up and by Syrian hands, through nonviolent struggle.
We are against any and all forms of authoritarianism in our country, the first and foremost among them being the Assad regime. We believe in building civic values now within ourselves and our society, laying the groundwork for a future Syria that will uphold human rights, by the just rule of law equally for all, regardless of religion, sect, ethnicity, national origin, political views, party affiliations, or gender. We believe in nonviolent struggle to replace the brutal Assad regime, and all authoritarian contenders, with a free, democratic state in a sovereign, independent Syria.
We do not wait for the regime to fall in order to be free; we are already free Syrians. Freedom begins on the inside, and Revolution begins in the self.
Tens of thousands of Syrians—who are already free of the grip of authoritarianism inside the self—suffer inhumane conditions and torture in Assad’s prison system, as do those Syrians who are hostages of authoritarian armed groups. Our series, “Prisoners of Conscience in Syria” tells the stories of a few prisoners of conscience. We salute their courage. Because petitions and demands for accountability have gone nowhere toward the release of such prisoners, all we are asking you to do—people of conscience everywhere—is to find a way to express your solidarity with their struggle, nonviolently.
Do it today before tomorrow, and do it as widely and as effectively as possible. Use your people power to support their people power.
At the least, you will give heart to their families, who have good reason to feel that the world has forgotten their sacrifice, their suffering, and their ongoing struggle.
